Freedom is a railroad Laid by a hundred hands Each plank a piece of progress Laid on the last’s demands Don’t let the tracks grow rusty Or fall to disrepair You cannot lose one section The hands must hold on there The train it won’t come easy There’s miles to be laid And if the track’s not ready It’ll ever be delayed For if one board is broken Or if the track’s cut short The train will stop its motion Our freedom will revert There’s many on the pathway Would like that train’s arrest And they will stop at nothing To put it to the test Vigilant and wide awake Our watchful eye we keep And guard the rails from morn to night Ne’er drifting off to sleep For the freedom train is a-coming The sleepers two by four Will raise up high all who ride From prejudice and war The trail is tough and treacherous And there's many along the way Fell in its addition To where it lies today They swung the mighty hammer / All through the darkest night The sound of justice rang out loud Oh what a glorious sight Now join your hands together With a hundred million more If all take hold the tether Of the common human store The track will not be brokered By mountain or by shore But stretch to every corner Of this wide world and more Freedom is a railroad Laid by a hundred hands Take in your two the next board It’s on your part it stands

I've been lost With a blind eye I've been lost To the mountainside I have heard Of the gentle stream I have heard Of the sparrow's dream In the cave Where I've spent my life In the cave There was not a light I will climb To the top of the peak I will climb To where the sparrow meets The sky High above Where the sun kisses me High above In this majesty I can be Like the sparrow dance I can be A greater man The heart that soars is as good as gold

about

The Golden Spike is a new musical that tells the story of Sun Wu and his journey as a worker on the Central Pacific Railroad in 1869 to China and back to the United States to reunite with his family. An epic of the west, family, labor, and a chapter in American history at the dawn of technological modernity. A collaboration with playwright Don Nguyen. These are six preview tracks from the piece.
